Zotero: Build a Useful Reading Library
Make every saved paper easier to find again.
Free software; optional paid storageZotero is a free reference manager. It collects source information, organises references, and works with word processors to insert citations and bibliographies.
Create a collection for your project. Save a journal record with the browser connector, then check its metadata. Add a PDF when you have access. Use a few consistent tags, such as “battery,” “review,” and “measurement.”
Write a short note for each important paper: What question does it ask? What evidence does it provide? How might you use it? This is more useful than saving hundreds of unread PDFs.
Use quotation marks and page details for exact quotations. Keep your own explanation separate from copied wording.
Remember: synchronisation and backup serve different purposes. Protect your library and respect copyright when sharing group materials. File-storage needs may affect which storage option you choose.
