Academic Writing #06: Report Findings Precisely
Report Findings Precisely
Organise results around the research questions. Begin each paragraph with its main finding, then supply evidence and a figure or table reference. Report relevant unexpected findings too.
Use numbers, units, sample sizes, and uncertainty where appropriate. Explain what “±” represents. Do not repeat every table entry in prose. A percentage change and a percentage-point change are different.
Separate the observation from its explanation. In journals with separate sections, detailed explanations usually belong in the discussion. Statistical significance does not automatically mean practical importance.
Try it
Invented result: error decreased from 8% to 5%. State the decrease in percentage points and as a relative percentage.
Model answer
The decrease is 3 percentage points, or 37.5% relative to the original error: (8 − 5) ÷ 8 × 100. State which measure you mean.
