Academic Writing #08: Discuss Meaning Without Overclaiming
Discuss Meaning Without Overclaiming
Begin the discussion with the answer to your research question. Explain how the results support that answer. Then compare them with relevant studies and consider possible explanations.
Use language that matches the evidence. “Suggests” signals a cautious interpretation; “causes” requires stronger support than an observed association. Explain alternatives instead of selecting only your favourite mechanism.
State limitations precisely: which material, population, condition, or measurement limits the conclusion? Connect future work to a specific unanswered question. A clear limitation helps readers use the finding correctly.
Try it
Improve this invented claim: “The correlation proves that coating thickness causes longer service life.”
Model answer
“Coating thickness was associated with longer service life; further tests are needed to assess causation.” Possible confounding factors should also be examined.
