Journal Rankings: Find a Defensible Top Five

A useful ranking always names its rules.

There is no single “top five” for all science and engineering. First choose a subject category, a year, and a metric.

Journal Impact Factor is reported in Clarivate’s Journal Citation Reports (JCR). CiteScore uses Scopus data and a four-year publication and citation window. SJR weights citations partly by their source. These measures answer different questions.

To create your list, open JCR or a public ranking service such as SCImago. Select the exact subject category and available data year. Keep the same document-source type, sort by your chosen metric, and record the first five journals, including tied ranks. Save the source link and access date.

Separate review journals from journals publishing original studies when comparing possible submission venues. Check scope and article type before deciding.

Remember: a journal-level metric cannot establish the quality of one paper or researcher. No numerical top-five list is asserted here without verified category-year data.
