Academic Writing #10: Make References Accurate and Traceable
Make References Accurate and Traceable
A citation tells readers which source supports a statement. Place it close to the relevant claim. Cite the original study when you rely on its finding, and cite datasets, software, or adapted figures when appropriate.
Check authors, title, year, journal, volume, pages or article number, and DOI. Follow the target journal’s reference style. Reference managers help, but imported records can contain errors. Every in-text citation should match a reference entry.
Example source from Academic Reading: Cybulski JS, Clements J, Prakash M. Foldscope: Origami-Based Paper Microscope. PLOS ONE. 2014;9(6):e98781. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0098781.
Try it
A reference tool supplies a title and DOI you cannot verify. Should you cite it?
Model answer
No. Locate and inspect the source first. Correct the record or remove the unsupported citation.
