Acknowledge Help and Declare Support

Acknowledgements recognise specific help from people who do not meet authorship criteria. Ask permission before naming someone. Example: “We thank [name] for assistance with microscopy.” Replace placeholders with verified information.

Decide authorship and contributions with your team using the journal’s criteria. Acknowledgements should not replace authorship when someone qualifies.

Report funding agencies and grant numbers accurately in the required location. Journals may request separate funding, author-contribution, competing-interest, and data-availability statements. Do not assume that thanking a funder satisfies every requirement. Check the journal’s current instructions.

Try it

A technician helped calibrate equipment. Draft a specific acknowledgement. What must you check before including it?

Model answer

“We thank [name] for assistance with equipment calibration.” Confirm the contribution, spelling, permission, and whether their overall contribution meets authorship criteria.
