Academic Writing #12: Revise for Clear, Careful English
Revise for Clear, Careful English
Revise in three passes. First check scientific meaning: do claims match the evidence? Next check paragraph order and links. Finally edit grammar, terminology, units, and references.
Prefer direct verbs: “We measured” is clearer than “We performed a measurement of.” Keep technical terms consistent. Use past tense for completed procedures and present tense for what a figure shows. Define abbreviations at first use.
When moving from Japanese to English, make subjects and logical connections explicit. Translation tools can help, but verify negatives and uncertainty. Ask a colleague to explain your main claim; revise if their understanding differs.
Try it
Improve this invented sentence: “It was done a measurement of the voltage, and this proves the device is always reliable.”
Model answer
“We measured the voltage.” Report the actual result next. Remove the universal reliability claim unless appropriate evidence supports it.
