Academic Writing #09: End with a Focused Conclusion

End with a Focused Conclusion

A conclusion gives readers the main answer to remember. State the contribution, its scope, and a useful implication. Avoid repeating the full abstract or listing every result.

Do not introduce new data. A prototype tested once is not a solution for every setting. Keep conditions and uncertainty attached to the final claim. Some journals place the conclusion inside the discussion rather than under a separate heading.

Finish with a specific next step when needed. “Test the device outdoors across seasons” is more useful than “More research is needed.”

Try it

Improve this invented conclusion: “Our sensor will work everywhere.” Evidence comes only from indoor tests.

Model answer

“The sensor performed well in the tested indoor conditions. Outdoor testing is needed to assess its performance under changing weather.” Define “well” with the relevant result in the paper.
